Among the most beautiful hamlet in Italy and Orange Flag

Cisternino rises Not far from the blue water of the sea, deep in the “Itria” Valley, in that land known as Murgia dei Trulli; it is a beautiful hamlet that, thanks to its artistic peculiarity, entered with full right inside the club i borghi più belli d’Italia; but this is not the only reward that this little town not far from Brindisi obtained; Cisternino won also the Orange Flag, a prestigious brand, that evaluates the little towns and certifies their qualities, in terms of tourism and environmental value. Cisternino, furthermore, is in the rank of “town friends of traveling tourism” for the characteristics of its territory and for promoting it.

Sightseeing

What attracts the most of this town is that it is located in a magic place, together with other two interesting towns: Locorotondo and Alberobello. Inside the historic centre of Cisternino it seems that time stops, because its central part remained unchanged through the centuries. The image that remains etched in the mind of the tourist is that of  its white houses (white, for the lime used to build them); their conic roofs; the shady and narrow alleys; its precious baroque churches and the elegance of its squares, above all the central one. Many are the parts that overlook the surrounding territory, rich of countrysides, surrounded by hills, sunny in summer and green in winter. Houses with conic white pointed roofs occupy these wide valleys, giving a landscape unique in the world. Usually, the tour of the town starts from Garibaldi Square, which has two treasures: the municipal garden and the Big Tower, an important monument of Norman art; the Door and the Mother Church. This one, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, preserves the ruins of the ancient Romanesque Church: the beautiful Virgin with the Child, that holds a little goldfinch, carved in stone in the XVI century A. C. by Stefano di Putignano. The tour inside this little town, which is characterized by its houses, leaning on each other, or unified by wonderful arches, or external staircases, starts from here. These houses have balconies with typical stone masks, examples of local Baroque. The allure of Cisternino is just that: roaming through its alleys and these houses.
